You are not alone in this

When the Darkness
Feels Permanent.

Depression is real, heavy, and exhausting. God knows. His Word speaks directly into the darkest places — not with easy answers, but with presence and truth.

Read the Scriptures

"Depression is not a weakness of faith. It is not punishment. It is not abandonment. It is a real weight that God has not left you to carry alone."

What God's Word Says About Depression

Five passages that speak directly into the darkness.

"The LORD is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Psalm 34:18

Depression is not a sign of weak faith — it is a real, crushing weight. This verse does not say God waits until you recover to come near. He draws especially close to the broken-hearted. You don't have to perform wellness to be near God.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Matthew 11:28

Jesus speaks directly to those who are exhausted. Not 'come when you're better.' Not 'come when you've cleaned yourself up.' Come as you are — burdened, weary, spent. That is exactly who this invitation is for.

"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."

Psalm 42:11

Even the Psalmist — a man of deep faith — wrestled with a downcast soul. He did not hide it, he did not pretend. He spoke honestly to his own soul. Faith and depression can exist in the same heart at the same time.

"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak… those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength."

Isaiah 40:29–31

Strength is not demanded from you right now. It is given to you. The promise isn't that you'll generate the strength yourself — it's that God replenishes what is depleted. You are not required to be strong. You are invited to hope.

"Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone."

Lamentations 3:32–33

God does not enjoy your suffering. This grief is not punishment. It is not abandonment. His compassion is described as 'unfailing' — it does not run out, it does not grow impatient, it does not walk away.

Five Steps for Today

Not a cure. A foothold. One small thing at a time.

01

Tell someone today

Depression thrives in silence. Speak it to one person — a friend, a pastor, Manna. The act of saying it out loud breaks its first layer of power.

02

Talk to a professional

Seeking a therapist or psychiatrist is not a failure of faith. Your brain is an organ. Caring for it is stewardship — the same God who heals also placed wisdom in doctors.

03

Don't stop small habits

When depression is severe, don't aim for transformation. Aim for small: drink water, step outside for 5 minutes, eat something. These are not trivial — they are acts of resistance.

04

Read one verse daily

Not chapters. One verse. Let it sit. Depression narrows vision — Scripture slowly widens it back. Start with Psalm 23 or Psalm 121.

Common Questions

What does the Bible say about depression?+

The Bible speaks directly to depression and emotional darkness. Psalm 34:18 says 'The LORD is close to the broken-hearted.' Many biblical figures including David, Elijah, and Jeremiah experienced deep despair. The Psalms are full of raw expressions of grief, fear, and hopelessness — and they are Scripture. Depression is not a sign of weak faith.

Is it okay to be depressed as a Christian?+

Yes. Depression is not a spiritual failure. Mental health struggles affect believers and non-believers alike. Jesus himself experienced deep anguish in Gethsemane. Seeking help — through prayer, counseling, therapy, or medication — is wise stewardship of the body and mind God gave you.

Can faith help with depression?+

Faith can be a powerful anchor during depression — providing meaning, community, and hope. However, faith is not a replacement for professional mental health care. Biblical encouragement works best alongside therapy, community, and when needed, medication. God uses all of these.
