The Mercies That Meet You at Sunrise — Morning Devotional

Beloved, before your feet touched the floor this morning, the mercies of God were already waiting for you. The prophet Jeremiah, sitting amid the ashes of a ruined Jerusalem, lifted his eyes and declared, 'It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness' (Lamentations 3:22-23, KJV). Notice that mercy is not rationed by your performance yesterday, nor diminished by the weight of what awaits you today. It is fresh, like manna on the desert floor, gathered one day at a time so that the children of God might learn to trust the Giver more than the gift. This June morning invites you into a sacred exchange. The psalmist sang, 'O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days' (Psalm 90:14). The word 'early' is not incidental. What you feed upon at sunrise will season every conversation, decision, and challenge that follows. If you fill the first hour with anxious scrolling, you will carry restlessness into your work. But if you fill it with the Word and presence of God, you will carry a quiet authority that the world cannot manufacture. Jesus Himself modeled this rhythm: 'And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed' (Mark 1:35). Consider, too, that the dawn is a sermon God preaches every twenty-four hours. 'The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge' (Psalm 19:1-2). Each sunrise is a reminder that resurrection is woven into the fabric of creation. What looked finished at sundown begins again at sunrise. Whatever disappointment closed your eyes last night, God has the authority and the kindness to open this day with new possibilities. Lazarus came forth, the stone was rolled away, and the women found the tomb empty in the early morning. God specializes in beginnings. So anchor yourself today in this truth: you are not walking into June 1st alone, and you are not walking into it empty. 'The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want' (Psalm 23:1). Whatever this day requires of you — patience with a difficult coworker, courage for a hard conversation, wisdom over your finances, faith for a delayed promise — the Shepherd has already gone before you. Walk gently. Speak truthfully. Give generously. And remember that the same God who hung the sun in the sky this morning is the One who has numbered every hair on your head and ordered every step of your day (Matthew 10:30; Psalm 37:23).
