Morning Manna: New Mercies for a New Day — Morning Devotional

Beloved, before your feet touch the floor and the demands of July 8th rush to meet you, pause and receive this ancient truth: 'It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness' (Lamentations 3:22-23, KJV). Jeremiah wrote these words from the ashes of a fallen Jerusalem, surrounded by ruin, yet he lifted his eyes and found God's mercy freshly delivered like manna on the wilderness ground. Whatever yesterday held — its victories, its failures, its unfinished business — this morning God hands you a portion of grace stamped with today's date. It cannot be stored. It cannot be borrowed. It must be gathered now. The Israelites in Exodus 16 learned that manna was a daily discipline of trust. Those who tried to hoard it found it 'bred worms, and stank' (Exodus 16:20). God was teaching them, and He is teaching us, that dependence is not weakness — it is the very posture of the blessed life. Jesus echoed this when He taught us to pray, 'Give us this day our daily bread' (Matthew 6:11). He did not say weekly or yearly. He tethered our hearts to today, because today is where God meets us. Anxiety about tomorrow starves the soul; presence with God nourishes it. This principle reshapes how we approach wealth, work, and relationships. Solomon wrote, 'The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it' (Proverbs 10:22). True prosperity is not the frantic accumulation of what we fear we will lack — it is the calm stewardship of what God has already provided. When we begin the day gathering God's mercy first, we labor from rest rather than for rest. Our decisions grow clearer, our generosity grows freer, and our peace grows deeper. The one who trusts the Giver never becomes a slave to the gift. So rise today with holy expectation. The same God who split seas and fed multitudes has already gone before you into this Wednesday. He knows the meetings on your calendar, the burdens on your heart, and the hopes you have barely dared to name. 'This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it' (Psalm 118:24). Gather your manna. Walk in His faithfulness. And let every step you take today be an act of worship to the God whose mercies are, even now, new.
