Stewardship: The Sacred Trust of Managing God's Wealth

At the foundation of biblical wealth lies a truth that dismantles every prideful notion of self-made success: 'The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein' (Psalm 24:1). Every dollar in your account, every acre of land, every talent in your hands, and every breath in your lungs belongs to God. You are not an owner — you are a steward, entrusted by the Master with resources that were never yours to begin with. This single revelation transforms the way we handle money, time, relationships, and opportunity. Stewardship is not a financial technique; it is a spiritual identity. The Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30 reveals the heart of God concerning stewardship. A man traveling into a far country delivered his goods to his servants — to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, 'to every man according to his several ability.' Notice that the Master distributed unequally, yet expected faithful multiplication from each. The two servants who traded and doubled their portion heard the words every believer longs to hear: 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.' The one who buried his talent out of fear was called wicked and slothful. Faithfulness, not the size of the portion, determines promotion in God's economy. Jesus taught in Luke 16:10-12 that stewardship follows a divine progression: 'He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?' God tests us with small things — a modest paycheck, a used car, a single opportunity — because how we handle little reveals how we would handle much. Many believers pray for abundance while mismanaging what they already possess, unaware that their present stewardship is the very examination that qualifies them for greater trust. Stewardship encompasses far more than money. Paul declared in 1 Corinthians 4:2, 'Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.' We steward our time (Ephesians 5:16), our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), our spiritual gifts (1 Peter 4:10), our families (Joshua 24:15), our influence, and the gospel itself (1 Corinthians 9:17). Every domain of life is a field entrusted to us for cultivation. The faithful steward asks not 'What do I want to do with this?' but 'What would the Owner have me do with this?' This shift from ownership to stewardship is the difference between anxiety and peace, between hoarding and generosity, between striving and resting. Generosity is the fruit of true stewardship. When we understand that God owns it all, giving becomes joyful rather than painful. Proverbs 3:9-10 instructs, 'Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.' The tithe is not a tax on the reluctant but the acknowledgment of the steward that the Master owns the whole harvest. Malachi 3:10 invites us to 'Prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.' God multiplies what is released into His hands and withers what is clutched in ours. The steward also plans wisely. Proverbs 21:20 says, 'There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.' Wise stewards budget, save, invest, and eliminate debt, remembering that 'the borrower is servant to the lender' (Proverbs 22:7). Joseph in Genesis 41 stewarded Egypt through seven years of plenty by storing one fifth of the harvest, preserving nations from famine. Diligent planning is not a lack of faith — it is faith working through wisdom. The Proverbs 31 woman 'considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.' She is celebrated not for spontaneity but for prayerful, strategic multiplication of what God placed in her care. Ultimately, every steward will stand before the Master and give account. 2 Corinthians 5:10 warns, 'For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.' The question on that day will not be 'How much did you accumulate?' but 'How faithfully did you manage what I entrusted to you?' Live now in light of that moment. Handle every resource — great or small, financial or spiritual — as one who will soon hear the Master's verdict. And by grace, may we all hear those glorious words: 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant.'
