The Long Road Home: The Prodigal Son and the Relentless Mercy of God

There is a road that leads away from the Father's house, and every one of us has walked at least a portion of it. In Luke 15, Jesus tells the story of a young man who could not wait for his inheritance and could not wait to be free of his father. He gathered his share, turned his back on home, and journeyed into a far country. But the far country is never as far as it feels, and freedom without the Father is only a slower kind of slavery. Before we ever meet the pigs, we meet the pride. Before we ever taste the husks, we taste the hunger of a soul that thought it could feed itself. Hear the words of our Lord: 'And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him' (Luke 15:20, KJV). This is our main text, and it is the beating heart of the gospel. The son rehearsed a speech of shame, but the father interrupted him with an embrace. The son planned to earn his way back as a servant, but the father restored him as an heir. This is not a story about a boy who found his way home; it is a story about a Father who never stopped watching the road. First, consider the tragedy of the far country. Sin always promises more than it pays and charges more than it advertised. The prodigal 'wasted his substance with riotous living,' and when a mighty famine arose, 'he began to be in want' (Luke 15:14). The far country will always end in famine, because it is a land that cannot sustain the soul God made for Himself. Isaiah warned, 'Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?' (Isaiah 55:2). Whatever pigpen you are sitting in tonight — addiction, bitterness, greed, lust, pride — it was never designed to feed a child of the King. Second, consider the turning point of remembrance. Scripture says, 'And when he came to himself' (Luke 15:17). Repentance begins the moment we stop pretending. The prodigal remembered the goodness of his father's house, and that memory became a map home. The Spirit of God is still doing this work today, drawing wanderers to their senses with the kindness of God. Paul writes, 'Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?' (Romans 2:4). If you have felt a holy homesickness stirring in your chest, that is not condemnation — that is the Father calling your name. Third, consider the triumph of mercy. The father did not wait at the gate with folded arms; he ran. In the culture of that day, a dignified elder never ran, yet this father hitched up his robe and sprinted through the village to reach his boy first. Mercy always runs faster than shame. 'But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ' (Ephesians 2:4-5). The robe covered the rags. The ring restored the authority. The shoes lifted him out of the dust. The feast declared to heaven and earth that this one who was dead is alive again. Beloved, this parable is not merely history — it is a mirror and an invitation. Perhaps you have been living as the younger son, chasing a horizon that keeps retreating. Perhaps you have been living as the older brother, serving in the field but cold in the heart, resenting the mercy God shows to others. Both sons need the Father. Both sons are being called to the feast. The question is not whether the Father is willing; Calvary settled that forever. The question is whether you will rise. So rise. Leave the pigpen where it stands. Do not wait until you feel worthy, for you will never feel worthy — you will only ever be welcomed. Let today be the day you turn your face toward home. The Father has already seen you. He is already running. And the robe, the ring, the shoes, and the feast are already prepared for the child who dares to believe that mercy is real.
