All TeachingsFrom the opening pages of Proverbs, the Holy Spirit announces a startling economic principle: wisdom is the principal thing. Solomon, the wealthiest king who ever lived, did not ask God for riches when offered any gift in the night vision at Gibeon. He asked for an understanding heart, and because he asked for wisdom, God added riches, honor, and length of days that no king before or after has matched. This is the divine order of prosperity — wisdom first, wealth as the natural overflow. Those who reverse this order chase wealth and lose both; those who honor it gain both in their season.
Wisdom in the Hebrew Scriptures is called *chokmah*, and it is no abstract intellectualism. It is skilled living — the practical artistry of applying God's truth to daily decisions. When Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God to construct the Tabernacle, Scripture says he was filled with wisdom for craftsmanship. Wisdom is the same anointing that builds tabernacles and builds estates. It is the substance by which the LORD founded the earth, as Proverbs 3:19 declares: 'The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.' If wisdom founded the cosmos, surely it can found your household economy.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of this wisdom, and here is where so many stewards stumble. They want the dividends of wisdom without the reverence that produces it. But Job 28 takes us on a mining expedition through the deep places of the earth, showing that gold and sapphires can be unearthed by human ingenuity, yet wisdom cannot be purchased with the gold of Ophir. Where then shall wisdom be found? The conclusion of the matter: 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.' Reverence is the entry fee into the treasury, and departing from evil is the key that opens its vaults.
Wisdom is also intensely relational. Proverbs personifies her as a woman crying in the streets, building a house with seven pillars, preparing a feast, and inviting the simple to forsake folly and live. This means wisdom is not merely studied — she is courted, loved, embraced. 'Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.' The promotion that wisdom brings is not the promotion of striving men — it is the elevation of a Father who delights to honor a son who delights in His ways.
Consider how wisdom multiplies resources where folly devours them. Two men receive identical inheritances: one is wise, the other is a fool. The fool says in his heart, 'Soul, take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry,' but God requires his soul that night. The wise man, like the ant of Proverbs 6, gathers in the summer and stores against the winter. He diversifies his portions, as Ecclesiastes 11:2 counsels: 'Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.' Wisdom sees the long horizon. She plants trees whose shade she may never sit under, and she leaves an inheritance to her children's children, just as Proverbs 13:22 commends.
Yet biblical wisdom is never severed from generosity. The wise woman of Proverbs 31 stretches out her hand to the poor even as she considers a field and buys it, even as she perceives that her merchandise is good. She trades, she manufactures, she invests — and she gives. James 3:17 reminds us that 'the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits.' Wisdom from above does not hoard. It is fruitful, and the fruit it bears feeds many. This is how God distinguishes earthly, sensual, and devilish cleverness from heavenly wisdom: the former breeds envy and strife, the latter breeds peace and provision.
Finally, every believer must remember that Christ Himself is made unto us wisdom from God, as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:30. To pursue wisdom is ultimately to pursue Jesus, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The cross looked like foolishness to the Greeks and a stumbling block to the Jews, but it is the wisdom of God and the power of God unto salvation — and unto every good work, including the stewardship of wealth. Build your house, your business, and your inheritance upon this Wisdom incarnate, and though the rains descend and the floods come, your foundation will not be moved. For he that walketh with the wise shall be wise, and the wisdom that walks with Christ inherits more than silver and gold — it inherits the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world.
