Bearing Fruit in Season: The Quiet Work of a Rooted Life

There is a tree the Psalmist describes that haunts me every time I read it. It stands by a river, unhurried and unshaken, its leaves green when other trees are bare, its branches heavy when other branches are empty. It does not strive. It does not strain. It simply stands where its roots can drink, and when its season comes, it bears its fruit. In a world addicted to instant results and visible success, God is still raising up trees like this — believers whose lives, in their proper season, will quietly astonish the world with fruit that did not come from striving, but from being planted in the right place. Our main text is Psalm 1:3, 'And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.' Notice the order. Planted, then watered, then fruitful, then prosperous. We have inverted this in our generation. We want prosperity before fruitfulness, fruitfulness before watering, and watering without ever being planted. But God's order cannot be hurried, and His fruit cannot be faked. The question this morning is not whether you are busy, but whether you are bearing — and whether what you are bearing is in season with what God is doing in your life. First, fruit grows from hidden roots, not public effort. Jesus said in John 15:5, 'I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.' Abiding is not an activity you can post about. It is the slow, secret, daily yielding of your heart to Christ in prayer, in the Word, in surrender. Most of what God is doing in a fruitful believer is happening underground, where no one applauds. If you will tend to the roots, God will take care of the fruit. Second, fruit comes in its season, not on your schedule. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, 'To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.' There is a season to be pruned and a season to bloom, a season of waiting and a season of harvest. Many believers abandon their calling in the winter, convinced that barrenness means rejection. But the same tree that looks dead in January is heavy with fruit in July. Do not despise your winter. God is not late; He is precise. What He plants in tears, He will gather in joy. Third, fruit is for others, not for ourselves. When Jesus cursed the barren fig tree in Mark 11:13-14, His complaint was not that the tree had no leaves, but that it had leaves without fruit — the appearance of life without the substance of it. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance — and every one of them is something another person tastes. You cannot eat your own fruit. If your spirituality only serves you, it is not yet fruit; it is still foliage. True fruit feeds the hungry, heals the wounded, and points the lost to the Gardener. Practically, this means three things this week. Plant yourself somewhere you can be watered — a local church, a daily time in Scripture, a community of believers who will speak truth to you. Stop uprooting yourself every time the soil feels uncomfortable; trees that are constantly transplanted never bear. Then accept your season. If God has you in a hidden place, be hidden well. If He has you in harvest, work while it is day. And finally, give your fruit away. Look for the one person this week who needs the patience, the encouragement, the generosity, or the gospel that God has been ripening in you. The world does not need more impressive Christians; it needs fruitful ones. It does not need louder branches; it needs deeper roots. Somewhere in this room is a believer who has been measuring their life by leaves — by appearances, by activity, by applause — and God is calling you today back to the riverbank. Come back to the Vine. Let Him prune what must go. Let Him water what must grow. And trust that the same God who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows will, in your season, bring forth fruit from your life that will outlast you and glorify Him.
