Faith Over Fear: Standing Firm When the Waves Rise

There is a storm raging in the hearts of God's people, and it does not always announce itself with thunder. Sometimes it arrives as a quiet diagnosis, a closed door, an unpaid bill, a sleepless night, or a future that suddenly looks like a fog. Fear is the oldest enemy of the soul — it crept into the garden before sin had a name, and it has been whispering ever since: 'Did God really say? Will God really come through?' But beloved, hear me today: you were not redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ to live as a prisoner of your imagination. You were called to walk by faith, and not by sight. Our main text is found in 2 Timothy 1:7 — 'For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.' Paul wrote those words from a Roman prison, with a sword hanging over his head, to a young pastor whose knees were trembling. And what did the old apostle say? He did not say, 'Timothy, your fear is understandable.' He said, 'Stir up the gift of God that is in thee.' Fear is a spirit, and faith is a spirit, and whichever one you feed will be the one that rules your house. First, faith remembers who God is. Fear has a short memory, but faith carries a long testimony. When Israel stood at the Red Sea with Pharaoh's chariots thundering behind them, Moses said in Exodus 14:13, 'Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD.' The same God who split the sea for your fathers has not lost His strength. He is not the God of yesterday only — He is the God of right now. Before you panic about tomorrow, rehearse what He has already done. A remembering saint is a fearless saint. Second, faith refuses to be ruled by what it sees. The eye is a thief; it will rob you of your peace before lunch. But Hebrews 11:1 declares, 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' Peter walked on water as long as he looked at Jesus, and he sank the moment he studied the waves. Child of God, stop studying your waves. Stop rehearsing the bad report. Lift your eyes to the hills, from whence cometh your help. What you stare at, you will eventually serve — so fix your gaze on Christ. Third, faith acts before the feelings catch up. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is obedience in the presence of fear. In Joshua 1:9 the Lord commanded, 'Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.' Joshua's knees may have shaken, but his feet still crossed the Jordan. Faith is a verb. It writes the resume, makes the phone call, forgives the offender, plants the seed, opens the business, and prays the bold prayer — even while the heart is still pounding. God meets you in the motion, not in the hesitation. Now comes the practical application. Take inventory this week of what you are feeding. Are you feeding fear by doom-scrolling, by repeating the worst-case scenario to everyone who will listen, by skipping prayer because you are too anxious to sit still? Or are you feeding faith — opening the Word every morning, speaking promises over your children, gathering with believers, giving even when the budget is tight, serving even when you are tired? Whatever you feed grows; whatever you starve dies. Starve the fear. Feed the faith. Write down three specific fears today and write a promise of God beside each one, and let Scripture have the final word in your mind. And so I come to the altar of your heart this hour. Jesus is not asking you to pretend you are not afraid; He is asking you to bring the fear to Him. Cast every care upon Him, for He careth for you (1 Peter 5:7). Surrender the worry, surrender the control, surrender the future you cannot see. Lay it down at the cross and pick up the shield of faith. The same Christ who stood up in a sinking boat and said, 'Peace, be still,' is standing up in your storm right now. Will you trust Him? Will you step out of the boat?
