Faith: The Currency of the Unseen Kingdom

From the opening pages of Genesis to the closing benediction of Revelation, faith stands as the golden thread that binds the soul of the believer to the storehouses of God. Hebrews 11:1 declares, 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' The Greek word for substance, hupostasis, was used in ancient commerce to describe the title deed to property — a legal guarantee of possession. When you exercise true biblical faith, you are not engaging in wishful thinking; you are taking hold of a deed signed in the blood of Christ, guaranteeing your inheritance in both this life and the next. Consider Abraham, the father of the faithful, who was called the friend of God and made exceedingly rich in cattle, silver, and gold (Genesis 13:2). His wealth was not the byproduct of striving but the overflow of believing. Romans 4:20-21 tells us he 'staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.' Abraham's prosperity flowed from a heart that trusted before it possessed. This is the divine economy: faith first, then the manifestation of provision. Faith is also the antidote to the spirit of fear that paralyzes stewardship. In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), the servant who buried his single talent did so because he was afraid. Fear shrinks resources; faith multiplies them. The two faithful servants doubled what they were given because they believed in the goodness and generosity of their master. True wealth, whether spiritual, relational, or financial, requires the courage to deploy what God has entrusted to you — to plant seed, to give generously, to invest wisely, and to risk obedience even when the outcome is unseen. Yet faith is not a formula for personal gain; it is a covenant relationship with the Giver. Jesus warned in Mark 11:22-24, 'Have faith in God... whatsoever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.' But this promise is anchored in the preceding verse: faith in God Himself, not faith in faith, nor faith in wealth. The mountain-moving believer is one whose desires have been refined in the furnace of intimacy with the Father, so that what he asks aligns with what heaven has already approved. Scripture also teaches that faith is tested before it is rewarded. James 1:2-4 instructs us to count it all joy when we fall into divers temptations, knowing that the trying of our faith works patience. Joseph waited thirteen years between the dream and the throne. David waited fifteen years between his anointing and his coronation. The interval between promise and possession is the classroom where faith matures into character, and character into stewardship worthy of greater trust. Those who cannot be faithful in little will never be entrusted with much (Luke 16:10). Moreover, faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Biblical faith is never passive; it labors, sows, builds, and gives. The widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17 had only a handful of meal and a little oil, yet when she acted in faith and fed the prophet first, her barrel did not waste nor her cruse fail throughout the famine. Her obedience activated supernatural supply. So it is with every believer: when we honor the Lord with our substance and with the firstfruits of all our increase (Proverbs 3:9-10), our barns are filled with plenty, and our presses burst out with new wine. Finally, the wealth that faith secures is not measured solely in coin but in communion. Ephesians 3:8 speaks of 'the unsearchable riches of Christ,' a treasure that moth and rust cannot corrupt and thieves cannot break through to steal. The faithful believer learns to hold earthly resources with an open hand, knowing they are tools for kingdom expansion, instruments of generosity, and seeds for eternal harvest. Walk by faith, not by sight. Trust the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, and in all your ways acknowledge Him — and He shall direct your paths into the abundance He has prepared from before the foundation of the world.
