Forgiveness — Free and Full

There is a moment in every honest soul when the weight of the past becomes unbearable. We remember the words we spoke, the people we wounded, the prayers we never prayed, and the promises we broke. We try to outrun the memory, drown it in distraction, or bury it beneath good works, but the conscience will not be silenced. Into that suffocating darkness, the gospel speaks one shattering, healing word: forgiven. Not partially. Not probationally. Not on the condition that we first prove ourselves worthy. Forgiven — free and full — because of the finished work of Jesus Christ at Calvary. This is not a doctrine to be admired from a distance; it is a fountain to be plunged into until every stain is washed away. Hear the main word of God for this hour, spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool' (Isaiah 1:18). God is not negotiating with sinners; He is announcing a verdict. The Judge of all the earth has looked at the cross of His Son, and on the basis of that perfect sacrifice, He declares the guilty to be clean. The blood of Jesus does not merely cover sin — it removes it as far as the east is from the west. Beloved, if God Himself has spoken this word over the repentant heart, who are you to keep accusing yourself? Lay down the gavel. The court has adjourned. Grace has won. First, forgiveness is free. It cannot be bought, bartered, or borrowed. Ephesians 2:8-9 declares, 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.' Every other religion in the world places a ladder before the sinner and commands him to climb. Christianity alone proclaims that God Himself descended the ladder, took on flesh, bore our hell, and offers salvation as a gift. You do not earn a gift; you receive it. Stop trying to pay a debt that has already been settled in full. The receipt was nailed to the cross, and across it Jesus wrote three words in His own blood: 'It is finished.' Second, forgiveness is full. It reaches the deepest sin and the darkest secret. The apostle John assures us, 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness' (1 John 1:9). Notice the word 'all.' Not most. Not the small ones. Not the respectable ones. All. The murderer Moses, the adulterer David, the denier Peter, the persecutor Paul — every one of them tasted the fullness of mercy and went on to shape redemptive history. Whatever you have done, whatever has been done to you, the blood of Jesus is deeper still. There is no pit so low that grace cannot reach lower, and no chain so strong that the cross cannot break it. Third, forgiveness received must become forgiveness released. Jesus was unmistakable: 'For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses' (Matthew 6:14-15). The forgiven heart becomes a forgiving heart, or it proves it was never truly forgiven at all. Unforgiveness is a poison we drink hoping someone else will die. It chains us to the very person who hurt us and gives them rent-free residence in our minds. But when we release them — not because they deserve it, but because Christ released us — the prison door swings open, and the prisoner who walks free is ourselves. So here is the practical application, and it is urgent. Take out a sheet of paper tonight and write two lists. On one side, write the names of those you have wounded — and go, as far as it depends on you, and make it right. On the other side, write the names of those who have wounded you — and before God, one by one, release them. Speak it aloud: 'In the name of Jesus, I forgive.' You may have to do it a hundred times before the feeling catches up with the decision, but the decision is the obedience, and the obedience is the doorway to freedom. Stop rehearsing the offense. Stop polishing the grudge. Stop nursing the wound. Bring it all to the cross and leave it there. And now, the call. Some of you have been carrying a sin for ten years, twenty years, a lifetime. You have prayed about it a thousand times and never felt clean. Hear the word of the Lord: the problem is not that God has not forgiven you — the problem is that you have not received what He has already given. Today is the day. Will you stop running? Will you stop hiding? Will you come, just as you are, and let the blood of Jesus do what only the blood of Jesus can do? And some of you are holding a grudge that is killing your marriage, your ministry, your peace. Will you lay it down at this altar and walk away free? The Father is running down the road to meet you. The robe is ready. The ring is ready. The feast is prepared. Come home. Come home. Come home.
