Made New: Discovering Your True Identity in Christ

There is a question that haunts every human heart, whispered in the quiet hours and shouted in the storms: Who am I? The world hurls a thousand answers at us — your job, your followers, your failures, your past, your bank account, your bloodline. But none of these can hold the weight of a soul. We were not made to be defined by what we do or what has been done to us; we were made to be defined by the One who made us. And when Jesus Christ enters a life, He does not merely improve the old self — He buries it and raises up something entirely new. The question is no longer 'Who am I?' but 'Whose am I?' — and in that answer, every chain begins to fall. Hear the cornerstone Scripture upon which we build today, the apostle Paul declaring in 2 Corinthians 5:17, 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!' This is not poetry — this is metaphysical reality. The believer is not a renovated sinner; the believer is a resurrected saint. Heaven has rewritten your name, rewritten your record, and rewritten your future. And tonight, beloved, I want you to stop borrowing an identity from a world that did not create you and cannot save you. Your true self has been hidden with Christ in God, and it is time you come home to it. First, in Christ you are CHOSEN. Before the foundation of the world — before galaxies spun, before time had a name — the Father set His affection upon you. Ephesians 1:4-5 declares, 'For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ.' You are not an accident of biology, not a leftover of circumstance, not an afterthought of eternity. You were chosen. The God who flung stars into being whispered your name with delight and decided that the universe would be incomplete without you. Rejection from people cannot un-choose what God has chosen. Live like the elect of heaven, not the orphan of earth. Second, in Christ you are REDEEMED. There is no sin in your story that the blood of Jesus has not already answered. 1 Peter 1:18-19 reminds us, 'For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.' Redemption means a price was paid to bring you out of bondage and into belonging. Your shame has an expiration date stamped in crimson. Stop rehearsing the sins God has already forgotten. The cross was not a partial payment — it was the receipt of a finished transaction. You are not what you were. You are bought, restored, and free. Third, in Christ you are EMPOWERED. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives within you (Romans 8:11), and that Spirit did not come to make you religious — He came to make you radiant. You carry resurrection power into hospital rooms, boardrooms, classrooms, and prayer closets. You are seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), commissioned as an ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20), and crowned a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). Anxiety is not your inheritance; peace is. Poverty of spirit is not your portion; abundance is. Stop shrinking back from a calling that the Almighty has already qualified you for. The Spirit within you is greater than any spirit against you. So what does this mean on Monday morning, when the boss is impatient, the bills are stacking, the marriage is strained, and the mirror is unkind? It means you preach to yourself before the world preaches to you. Every morning, you open your eyes and remind your soul: I am chosen, I am redeemed, I am empowered, I am loved. You stop letting the algorithm define your worth. You stop letting old labels — addict, failure, divorced, depressed, broke, forgotten — speak louder than the verdict of Calvary. You write Scripture on your wrist, your wallpaper, your wall. You renew your mind (Romans 12:2), and as you do, the chains of old identity quietly fall into the dust where they belong. Beloved, the invitation tonight is not to try harder, but to surrender deeper. You cannot earn an identity that has already been gifted; you can only receive it. Lay down the costumes you have been wearing — the performance, the people-pleasing, the perfectionism, the pretending. Come to the altar of your own heart and say yes to the Jesus who has been waiting to call you by your true name. The prodigal does not have to clean up before coming home; he only has to come. And the Father is already running down the road to meet you.
