Made New: Discovering Your True Identity in Christ

There is a question that haunts every human heart, whispered in the quiet hours and shouted in moments of crisis: Who am I? The world offers a thousand answers — your job, your failures, your family name, your followers, your wounds. But every identity built on shifting sand will collapse when the storm comes. Beloved, hear me today: you were never meant to discover your identity by looking inward or outward. You discover it by looking upward, to the One who formed you in the womb and called you by name before the foundation of the world. Today, we tear down every false label and step into the truth of who God says you are. Our main text is 2 Corinthians 5:17: 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!' Notice the apostle Paul does not say you are being repaired, renovated, or improved. He says you are a new creation. The Greek word is kainos — brand new in kind, never before existing. When you came to Christ, heaven did not patch up the old you; it buried the old you and resurrected something entirely new. This is the foundation of every blessing, every breakthrough, and every bold step you will ever take. You cannot walk in the promises of God while still wearing the rags of your old identity. First, you are CHOSEN. In a culture that measures worth by performance and popularity, the gospel proclaims a scandalous truth: God chose you before you chose Him. Ephesians 1:4 declares, 'For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.' You were not an afterthought. You were not Plan B. Before there were stars in the sky or oceans on the earth, the Father wrote your name on the palm of His hand. Rejection by people cannot undo the election of God. When the enemy whispers that you are unwanted, lift your head and remember: the King of glory hand-picked you. Second, you are REDEEMED. Identity is not just about who chose you — it is about what was paid for you. 1 Peter 1:18-19 reminds us, 'For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed... but with the precious blood of Christ.' Your value is not determined by your past mistakes, your bank account, or the opinions of broken people. Your value is stamped in the blood of Jesus. A diamond does not lose its worth because it falls in the mud, and you do not lose your worth because life has dragged you through the dirt. Lift up your head — you have been bought with a price, and the Buyer never regrets the purchase. Third, you are EMPOWERED. Identity in Christ is not a sentimental feeling; it is a supernatural inheritance. Romans 8:17 says, 'Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.' Co-heir. Read that again. You do not come to the King's table to beg for crumbs; you come as family to feast on promises. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11). That means fear has no authority over you, poverty has no claim on you, and addiction has no chain strong enough to hold you. You are not trying to become somebody — in Christ, you already are somebody. So what do we do with this truth? We stop rehearsing the old story. Every morning, before the world tells you who you are, open the Word and let God remind you. Write it on your mirror, speak it over your children, declare it over your finances. When opportunity comes, do not shrink back saying, 'Who am I?' Stand up and say, 'I am who God says I am.' Build your marriage, your business, your ministry, and your wealth on this rock, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. The kingdom advances through people who know who they are. But here is the altar call: you cannot live out an identity you have never received. Maybe today you have been performing for love, hiding in shame, or drowning in labels that were never yours to carry. Jesus is standing before you right now with open arms, ready to exchange your old name for a new one. Will you come? Will you lay down the counterfeit and pick up the crown? The cross is empty, the tomb is empty, and the throne is occupied — and the One on the throne is calling you home. Today is the day. This is the hour. Step into who you have always been meant to be.
