The Far Country and the Father's Open Arms: The Prodigal Son and the Mercy That Will Not Let Us Go

There is a road in every human heart. It leads away from the Father's house, and it is paved with the brittle stones of self-will. The younger son in Luke 15 walked that road with his pockets full and his eyes shining, certain he had finally seized his freedom. But the far country always lies about what it can give. It promised him satisfaction and handed him swine. It promised him liberty and chained him to hunger. It promised him friends and abandoned him to the dust. And yet — blessed be God — the far country could not break the thread that bound him to his father's love. That thread is mercy, and mercy is the theme of heaven. Hear the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: 'And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him' (Luke 15:20). Notice the geography of grace. The son is still 'a great way off,' still smelling of the pigpen, still rehearsing his speech of unworthiness — and the Father is already running. In the ancient Near East, dignified men did not run; running required lifting the robe and exposing the legs, an act of shame. But love does not stand on dignity when a child is coming home. The cross of Christ is the Father, robe lifted, running through history toward every prodigal who will turn. First, consider this: **sin always promises more than it pays.** The younger son 'wasted his substance with riotous living' and soon 'began to be in want' (Luke 15:13-14). The far country is a counterfeit kingdom. It dazzles the eyes and starves the soul. Scripture warns us plainly: 'There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death' (Proverbs 14:12). Every prodigal eventually meets the pig trough — the moment when the husks of the world cannot satisfy the hunger God placed in us for Himself. Beloved, if you are tasting husks tonight, take heart: the trough is often the threshold of grace. It is in the wreckage of our rebellion that we finally hear the voice that has been calling all along. Second, **repentance begins the moment we come to ourselves.** The text says, 'And when he came to himself' (Luke 15:17). Sin is a kind of insanity; it convinces us that the Father's house is a prison and the pigpen is paradise. Repentance is the sober dawn — the moment the lie collapses and reality returns. The prodigal did not wait until he was clean to come home; he came home so that he could be made clean. As the prophet declared, 'Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon' (Isaiah 55:7). God does not require you to fix yourself before you come. He requires only that you come. Third, **the Father's mercy is greater than our worst rehearsal.** The boy practiced his speech: 'Make me as one of thy hired servants' (Luke 15:19). But the Father interrupted his confession with a kiss, called for the best robe, the ring, the shoes, and the fatted calf. He did not restore him as a servant; He restored him as a son. This is the gospel in miniature. 'But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us' (Romans 5:8). The robe is the righteousness of Christ. The ring is the seal of sonship. The shoes are the dignity of a free man. The feast is the joy of heaven over one sinner who repents. There is no half-welcome at the Father's table. Now comes the practical application. There are three kinds of people listening to this sermon tonight. There is the prodigal in the pigpen — still hoping the far country will deliver on its promises. To you, the Spirit says: come home. There is the prodigal on the road — already turning, already trembling, already rehearsing the speech of unworthiness. To you, the Father says: I see you, and I am running. And there is the elder brother — outwardly faithful but inwardly bitter, resenting the mercy shown to others (Luke 15:28-30). To you, Jesus says: 'Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine' (Luke 15:31). Do not let your obedience curdle into pride. The Father's joy over the returning is not a theft from the remaining; it is the very heart of heaven, and you are invited into it. So what will you do with the open arms of God? You cannot stay neutral in the presence of mercy. To delay is to choose the husks one more night. To linger is to call the Father's running a small thing. But the gospel is not a small thing — it is the costliest love in the universe, purchased by the blood of Jesus on a Roman cross. Today, while it is called today, rise. Leave the swine. Leave the shame. Leave the speech of self-condemnation. The Father has already seen you on the road. The robe is in His hand. The feast is already prepared. Come home — and do not be afraid of the running God.
