The Long Walk Home: The Prodigal Son and the Mercy That Runs to Meet Us

There is a road in every human heart — a dusty, lonely road that leads away from the Father's house. We have all walked it. Some of us walked it with defiance, demanding our portion of the inheritance before its time. Others walked it quietly, slipping out under the cover of compromise, of pride, of small daily surrenders to the world. But every prodigal eventually arrives at the same place: a pigpen of the soul, where the husks of this world cannot satisfy the hunger God placed within us. And it is there, in the silence of the swine field, that grace begins its sweetest work. Luke 15 is not merely a parable Jesus told — it is a mirror He held up to humanity, and a window He opened into the heart of the Father. Our main text is Luke 15:20 — 'And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.' Beloved, do not pass over those words too quickly. The father saw him. The father ran. The father kissed him. In the culture of the ancient Near East, dignified men did not run; it was shameful for an elder to lift his robes and sprint through the village. Yet the Father of mercy gathered up His glory and ran — because love that has been waiting cannot walk. This is the heart of God toward every returning soul, and it is the foundation of every point we will preach today. First, mercy begins with remembering. Scripture says, 'And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!' (Luke 15:17). The prodigal's restoration did not begin when he reached the house — it began when he remembered the house. There is a moment in every wandering soul when the Holy Spirit whispers, 'You were not made for this.' The husks of sin can never satisfy a child of the King. If you are far from God today, hear this: the very fact that you are dissatisfied is grace itself calling you home. Repentance is not first a feeling of sorrow; it is first a coming to your senses. Second, mercy moves toward us before we reach it. 'But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him' (Luke 15:20). The son was rehearsing his confession, counting his unworthiness, preparing to beg for the place of a servant — and the father interrupted his speech with a kiss. This is the scandal of grace: God does not wait at the gate with crossed arms; He runs the road to meet the returning sinner. Romans 5:8 declares, 'But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.' You do not have to clean yourself up before coming home. You only have to turn around. The Father will cover the rest of the distance. Third, mercy restores what shame could never repair. The father called for the best robe, the ring, the shoes, and the fatted calf (Luke 15:22-23). The robe covered his rags. The ring restored his authority. The shoes marked him as son, not servant. The feast announced to the whole village: this one belongs to me. Isaiah 61:7 promises, 'For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion.' The enemy wants you to live in the memory of the pigpen, but heaven wants to clothe you in the dignity of sonship. Mercy is not merely the cancellation of debt — it is the conferring of glory. Now hear the practical application. Some of you have been rehearsing your confession for years, convinced that God is angry, that the door is closed, that you have wandered too far. You have not. The Father's eyes have never left the horizon of your life. Others of you are not the younger son but the elder brother — faithful in service but bitter in spirit, resentful of the mercy God shows to others. Repent of that too. Mercy is not a resource that runs out when others receive it. Come back to the feast. Come back to the joy. Come back to the Father's house, where there is bread enough and to spare. And once you are home, become a runner yourself — lift your robes and sprint toward the prodigals in your family, your workplace, your church. The world has had enough of religion that walks. It needs disciples who run. So I make this appeal to you today: do not delay another season in the far country. The husks will not satisfy. The friends of the world will not stay when your money runs out. But the Father is watching the road. He has seen you coming. The robe is already in His hands, the ring is already polished, and the feast is already prepared. Will you arise today and come to your Father? Will you let mercy run to meet you? Heaven is leaning forward, and the angels are ready to rejoice — for one sinner who repents brings more joy in the courts of God than ninety-nine who never strayed (Luke 15:7). Come home, beloved. Come home.
