The Power of Prayer: Heaven's Open Door

There is a sound that terrifies the kingdom of darkness more than any other — it is not the sound of preaching, nor the sound of singing, nor even the sound of miracles. It is the sound of a saint on his knees. From the moment Abel's blood cried out from the ground, God has been listening for the voice of His people. Every revival in history, every prison door that swung open, every sickness that fled, every nation that turned back to God, began the same way: someone somewhere dared to believe that the God of heaven still answers prayer. Beloved, you are holding in your hand the most under-used weapon in the arsenal of the Almighty — and today, God is calling you back to the place of prayer. Our main text is found in James 5:16-18: 'The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.' Notice the word 'availeth' — it means to accomplish, to prevail, to have great force. Prayer is not passive; prayer is productive. Prayer is not wishful thinking; prayer is warfare. Prayer is not the last resort of the weak; prayer is the first weapon of the strong. First, prayer moves the heart of God. In Jeremiah 33:3 the Lord declares, 'Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.' This is not a suggestion — it is an invitation from the throne. The Creator of galaxies has bent low and given you His personal number, and He has promised that when you call, He will answer. Many believers live defeated lives not because God is silent, but because they have never picked up the phone. When you pray, you are not talking to the ceiling; you are addressing the One who spoke worlds into existence. Second, prayer moves the hand of man toward the will of God. Luke 22:44 tells us that in Gethsemane, 'being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.' Even the sinless Son of God did not face His greatest hour without prayer. If Jesus needed to pray, how much more do we? Prayer is the school where our stubborn wills are surrendered and where 'not my will, but thine' is forged in the fire of communion. The man who kneels before God can stand before anyone. Third, prayer moves the mountains of impossibility. Jesus declared in Mark 11:24, 'What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.' Impossibility is the native soil in which the miracles of God grow. Peter walked out of prison because the church prayed without ceasing. The walls of Jericho fell because a people cried out. The fire fell on Carmel because one man prayed seven times. What mountain are you facing today — a diagnosis, a debt, a wayward child, a broken marriage, a closed door? Heaven is waiting for you to pray it into the ground. Practically, this means we must schedule prayer as we schedule appointments, protect it as we protect our paycheck, and prioritize it above our preferences. Begin with a morning watch of even fifteen minutes before your phone touches your hand. Keep a prayer list of names, needs, and nations. Fast one meal a week and give that time to intercession. Pray Scripture back to God — for His Word will not return void. Gather with two or three others weekly, for where two agree touching any thing, it shall be done. Stop informing God of your problems and start informing your problems of your God. Beloved, the greatest tragedy of the modern church is not that we lack talent, technology, or training — it is that we have prayerless pulpits and prayerless pews. But today can be the turning point. The same God who answered Elijah, who opened Peter's prison, who raised Lazarus, and who split the Red Sea is still on the throne, and He is waiting for a people who will call upon His name. Will you be that people? Will you be that man? Will you be that woman? Heaven's door is open — will you walk through it on your knees?
