From the moment God formed you in your mother's womb, He stitched into your soul a calling that no degree, no salary, and no applause from man can satisfy. The prophet Jeremiah heard the Lord declare, 'Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations' (Jeremiah 1:5). Beloved, you were ordained before you were born. The question is not whether God has a purpose for your life — the question is whether you will rise up and walk in it.
Our main text today is Ephesians 2:10: 'For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.' Notice three powerful truths buried in this single verse. You are His workmanship — His poem, His masterpiece. You were created in Christ Jesus — re-made, re-born, re-commissioned. And there are good works prepared in advance — a path already paved, waiting for your obedient feet. Purpose is not something you chase; it is something you surrender to. It is not invented in a boardroom; it is unveiled in a prayer closet.
First, walking in purpose requires CLARITY THROUGH SURRENDER. Proverbs 3:5-6 commands, 'Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.' Many believers stall in the fog of confusion because they keep grabbing the steering wheel back from God. Clarity is not given to the curious — it is given to the consecrated. When you finally lay down your plan, your timeline, and your ambition on the altar, Heaven begins to whisper the next step. Surrender is not the death of your dream; it is the birth of God's.
Second, walking in purpose demands COURAGE IN THE CALLING. When God commissioned Joshua to lead a nation across the Jordan, He thundered, 'Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest' (Joshua 1:9). Purpose will always require you to do something that frightens you. It will ask you to start the business, write the book, leave the comfortable job, preach the sermon, forgive the betrayer, or cross an ocean. Fear is the gatekeeper of every God-given assignment — and faith is the key that turns the lock. Courage is not the absence of trembling; it is obedience while trembling.
Third, walking in purpose produces CONSISTENCY IN THE COMMON. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, 'And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.' Most of purpose is not platform — it is plowing. It is showing up faithfully to the small assignments while you wait for the big ones. Joseph stewarded a prison before he ruled a palace. David tended sheep before he tended a kingdom. Jesus swung a hammer for thirty years before He preached for three. If you cannot be faithful in the mundane, God will not trust you with the magnificent. Your daily faithfulness is the soil in which your divine destiny takes root.
So here is the practical application, church. This week, take an honest inventory before God. Ask Him three questions and write down what you hear: 'Lord, what have You called me to that I have been avoiding? What gift have You given me that I have buried? What next step are You asking me to take in the next seven days?' Then act. Do not wait for the whole staircase to appear — take the one step you see. Cancel the distraction. Open the laptop. Make the phone call. Schedule the meeting. Begin the fast. Purpose is unlocked by movement, not by meditation alone.
Beloved, the tragedy of this generation will not be that people lacked talent — it will be that they lacked surrender. Heaven is filled with unopened gifts because earth was filled with unsurrendered hearts. But it is not too late for you. The same God who called Moses from a burning bush, Gideon from a winepress, and Peter from a fishing boat is calling your name today. He is not asking for your ability; He is asking for your availability. Will you rise? Will you walk? Will you surrender? The path is paved. The grace is poured out. The Father is waiting. Step into the purpose for which you were born.
